Building an Interest in Maths

1. Offer Containers Filled with Small Treasures

What do preschoolers love? Treasure! Whether it’s a shiny coin, a rock they found in the garden, or your own pocketful of change, try giving these little treasures to your child to look at. Not only will this encourage the child to be curious about maths and its relationships with the real world, but your child may be able to count how many small treasures there are. The most exciting part of this activity is that it invites a play connection between the real world of treasure and the symbolic number system of counting. (Does your child like numbers? 2. Talk About Maths

How do you talk with your child about maths? You might say things like “Mummy likes the number five because it is a nice big number.” See if you can come up with some other numbers and include it in conversation.

3. Measure Things

How large is a marble? How many beans are there in your bowl? This is an opportunity for you to start talking about numbers and measurement. You can measure the length of your child’s arm with ruler or use your fingers to count things.

4. Build Together

The more child build, the better! Use building blocks, crafts and arts in a way that incorporates maths. These activities can also be rich in counting practice.
