When you start checking out all of the new baby gear you can get for your little one, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed! Swings, mamaroos, pack-and-plays, bouncers, and more are plentiful! One of the most popular items is a bouncer. Bouncers can be a great option, but in recent years, there have been concerns about the safety of babies using bouncers. So, are bouncers safe? Let’s explore that question a bit more.
Read All the Instructions and Warnings
The first thing you need to do with any baby product is read all about it. Read the assembly instructions, instructions for use, the warnings, and any additional materials they offer. These items might seem super intuitive, but there might be things about them you don’t know or overlooked. To keep the baby even more safe, make sure you have read all the warnings and instructions before using any baby products–even if it seems silly or unnecessary.
Register Products
Many baby items such as car seats and bouncers come with a way to register your product. You can usually do this online or by mailing in a postcard that comes with your product, in the box. Make sure you register all of these products so companies can contact you if there is a recall or defect with your product. This will also keep your baby much safer.
Placement of the Bouncer
Part of keeping a bouncer safe is the placement of the bouncer. Bouncers should never be placed on surfaces higher than the floor. So tables and countertops are a no-no. Since bouncers move around a lot, having them on a high surface can mean that the baby can fall and be seriously injured. So, just make sure to always, always put bouncers on the floor and away from stairs.
Supervision
Another key thing to know about bouncers is that you need to supervise your baby while they are in it. If they are getting fussy, it might be time to take them out. Also, if they start looking sleepy, it’s time to take them out. It’s not safe for babies to sleep in bouncers. So, as long as you are there with the baby and keeping a close eye on them and supervising them, it should keep them much safer in theri bouncer.
Consider Baby’s Age and Weight
Certain products are only rated for babies that are within a certain age range or weight range. So, pay close attention to this as you purchase products. Baby should be being weighed regularly at the doctor’s office. So, you should be able to keep an eye on their weight and length fairly easily. Make sure your baby is using products that are the right sizes for them. SOmething that’s too big or too small can be dangerous.
So, Are Bouncers Safe?
When used properly under careful supervision, bouncers can be a safe place for babies to learn, grow, and observe the world around them. Just make sure you consult with your pediatirican before using any baby products, in case the doctor has concerns or a different opinion.
If you’re looking for a great bouncer, one of our favorites is the new ergobaby bouncer. It’s a three-in-one bouncer that can be used by newborns, babies, and toddlers. The bouncer also is made of soft material that is washable and the whole thing folds down flat for easy transport or storage.
